Black Power 4/16
While reading Black Power, a quote stuck out to me in chapter two that said, “Throughout this country, vast segments of the black communities are beginning to recognize the need to assert their own definitions, reclaim their history, their culture; to create own sense of community and togetherness.” (Ture PDF 39) I relate this quote to Coates Between the World and Me when he talks about rejecting the dream. I think they are relatable because by African Americans building their own communities and futures, their actions reject the white standard of the American Dream with white picket fences, fresh green grass, and a suburban white neighborhood. As a Black woman, I think the Black community and black culture is such vital aspect of my life mainly because it makes up a large part of my identity. For example, I am in college now to pave my own future and to do well within the Black community. If going off everything we have read in class, by definition I am rejecting the Dream by not following the white standard that society expects me to mold into.
