During our last class, we talked about the lack of diversity on campus. It got me thinking about our campus, and how we fit into this. I have never walked into a room on campus, and did not see a person who looked like. It did not matter if it was a class, a presentation, an event, food, work, anything, I am always greeted by a person like me.
As a white person, I never feel like I am the minority when I go anywhere. I am never targeted when I go out on the weekends by CPS. I can always find someone who is white within probably 25 steps of me at all times.
The lack of diversity on campus is terrible. W&J thrives on the idea, that we are a diverse campus but we aren’t. Yes, we have clubs on campus to promote diversity for race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. but is it enough?
To create a more diverse, welcoming campus the college has to take tremendous strides. They are lacking in all spectrums of diversity. To make change, the school needs to stop saying that they are diverse. 20% of our school is a minority, compared to 76% being white, and the other 4% being international students. With these statistics that means around 270 students out of 1,356 are a minority.  ( https://www.washjeff.edu/wj-at-a-glance) We have a small percentage of students already, and this number is incredibly small. W&J tries to promote diversity by including one or two people of color in every ad. This is not a good way to promote diversity. Bringing more minority students to campus, and creating a safe, loving, empowering environment is the way to create diversity. W&J needs to stop lying to themselves, about the diversity on campus, and actually create change to make it the college they say we are.
